This Month of Rajab: Reflect, Recalibrate, and Reach Out
Life can feel like a whirlwind sometimes — juggling work deadlines, family responsibilities, and the to-do lists that never seem to end. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos and forget to pause, breathe, and reconnect with our purpose. That’s why the sacred month of Rajab gives us the perfect opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for the holy month of Ramadan that is not too far away.
Rajab, one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Qur'an, holds a special place in Islam.
Allah says: “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred…” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36). This sacredness calls for even more devotion, self-discipline, and good deeds. Among the best of deeds is charity, a timeless act of compassion that is one of the most beautiful essences of our faith.
In Islam, charity is not merely a financial transaction; it is an act of love, mercy, and solidarity. By giving, we not only ease the suffering of others but also purify our own souls and draw closer to Allah SWT.
Rajab was divinely selected for three historic and momentous events:
-The marriage of the noble parents of the Prophet (saw)
-Aminah, the noble mother of the Prophet (ﷺ) conceiving the Best of Creation (ﷺ)
-The miraculous Night Journey & Ascension (Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj), which took place on the 27th night of Rajab.
Along with these significant events, the month of Rajab also includes birthdays of prominent figures in Islam, such as the 13th of Rajab that marks the birth anniversary of the Prophet’s (ﷺ) son in law and Caliph Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (R.A).
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) described Rajab as a month for sowing seeds of goodness. Narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (ﷺ) would say: “O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha’ban and allow us to reach Ramadan” (Tirmidhi). This supplication underscores the significance of Rajab as a month of seeking forgiveness, laying the foundation for good habits, and engage in acts of service to humanity.
The month of Rajab inspires us to reflect on our blessings and recognise the struggles of those less fortunate. Our blessed Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has stated, “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity” (Bukhari).
Imagine the Day when we will be questioned about our deeds and seeking Allah’s SWT mercy, how beautiful it would be to find ourselves in peace because we helped a family achieve warmth and comfort during the bitter cold this winter.
Charitable acts hold even greater significance during sacred months like Rajab. It is also known as "Rajab al-Murajjab," signifying that it is highly esteemed, revered, and greatly honoured.
