A Guide to Preparing for Ramadan Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually
Today, marks the start of a new phase in our lives. A phase that visits us every year, inviting us to become the best version of ourselves. It is the blessed month of Ramadan that teaches us the art of slowing down and reconnecting with our true inner self. A time that we could use to devote ourselves to the essence of our faith. Be it reciting the holy Qur’an regularly, offering Tahajjud, starting a journal writing our favourite names of Allah (SWT) or helping the most vulnerable, we plan to become the best Muslim because this is a month where good deeds are multiplied by 70 or even more!
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is reported to have said,
“The multiplication of rewards varies based on the deed, sincerity, and the time and place in which it is performed. The most sacred times, like Ramadan, increase rewards exponentially." (Muslim)
We are waiting for an opportunity to tell Allah (SWT) how grateful we are to be His servants. At every Suhoor or Iftar, with delicacies spread across the table and while enjoying His bounties with family and friends, our hearts are filled with sincere ‘Alhamdulillah’. Ultimately, Ramadan is about depriving our ‘Nafs’ (lower self) of basal bodily desires such as food, intimacy, sleep and instead strengthen our spiritual connection.
No matter the state of our mind and heart, whether it feels overwhelmed due to stress or heavy because of the burden of sins, the beauty of this sacred month lies in its gentle invitation to return to Allah, meeting us where we are—amidst our struggles, doubts, and moments of stillness. It is a beautiful reminder that even in our moments of extreme loneliness, Allah SWT is a confidante who despite knowing our worst truths will never abandon us. He was and will be by our side, keenly listening to our unsaid words, providing comfort and caressing our broken hearts towards a journey of healing and greater purpose.
It does not call for perfection overnight or a complete transformation to break away with anything that has weighed down our souls, yet, what matters most is the sincerity behind our intentions.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “Actions are judged by intentions, so each person will get what they intended.” (Sahih Bukhari).
Whether it’s a whispered dua, a brief moment of stillness before Fajr, or a decision to break a bad habit, it is a time to renew our intentions and spend time in deep reflection visualising the graph of our lives. How many a times were we saved from grave dangers, happinesses that knocked at our doors from nowhere and how beautifully our problems were turned into meaningful experiences; we realise there were blessings all along. Doing things intentionally is like planting a tree and only the right intentions can make a deed to grow fruitful such that it benefits your soul and those around you. Goodness, the likes of our Thirst Relief, Sponsor an Orphan or Adopt a Gran sponsorships has a ripple effect, and it spreads far and wide to positively impact the lives of those who we may not even cross paths with, Subhan Allah!
But to fully avail ourselves of the benefits and blessings of this month, it is important that we prepare ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Below are a few tips and suggestions to help you make the most of this spiritual journey:
Preparing Physically: Building Strength for Worship
Fasting from dawn to sunset is a beautiful act of devotion, but it requires physical readiness to abstain from food and water from the breaking of dawn till the crimson skies of dusk. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
Regulate Your Sleep Schedule: Begin going to bed earlier, so waking up for Suhoor and Fajr becomes easier. Proper rest ensures your body is energized for the long fasts ahead.
Eat Mindfully: Reduce caffeine, deep fried and processed foods while focusing on nutrient-rich meals. What you eat now will determine how well you handle the fasts during Ramadan.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to Ramadan will help your body maintain energy levels during the fasting hours.
Preparing Mentally by Embracing the Right Mindset
Ramadan is a time to cleanse not just the body but also reset the mind and heart towards a deeper sense of fulfilment. Here are ways to cultivate a positive mindset:
Practice Patience: Use the start of Ramadan period to work on controlling negative thoughts, anger, and harmful speech. Patience is key to a fulfilling Ramadan.
Set Clear Intentions: Reflect on what you want to achieve during Ramadan—whether it’s strengthening your faith, increasing your charity, or mending relationships.
Limit Distractions: Reduce unnecessary screen time and replace it with activities that bring you closer to Allah, such as pondering over the verses of the holy Qur’an or engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah). Indulge in deep contemplation about the purpose of your creation and turn to Allah SWT for guidance.
Preparing Spiritually: Strengthening Your Connection with Allah
Ramadan offers a golden opportunity to deepen your spiritual connection. Here’s how to prepare spiritually:
Increase Your Worship: Begin praying extra nafl (voluntary) prayers and reading the Qur’an daily. It is more advisable to understand and absorb what you’re reading than competing to finish ahead of others. These small efforts will help you build momentum for the blessed month.
Repent and Seek Forgiveness: To err is human but to seek reform through guidance is one of the signs of a true believer. Let’s use this month to absolve our sins and start afresh with a clean slate.
Give in Charity: By helping others, we actually help ourselves. The bread we place in another’s hands may vanish by night fall, but the kindness it carries lingers beyond time. We were not created to merely exist—we were made to serve, to love, to give, so that in another’s relief, we find our own fulfilment. Find ways to increase your goodness here
